چکیده

The quantum evaporation experiments of Brown and Wyatt have been re-analysed in the light of a recent measurement of the high-energy phonon spectrum created by a pulse-heated thin film. Two sources of systematic error become significant at the level of the precision required by this new analysis: firstly, in the detector position which is recalibrated by using large-angle roton evaporation; and secondly, in the liquid height due to capillary action affecting the level-detectors. These effects have been included in an improved simulation of the experiment which has brought the angular dependence of the measured and theoretical phonon-atom evaporation results into agreement within the mechanical tolerances of the apparatus. The reanalysis suggests that the roton-atom evaporation probability increases with wave vector. PACS numbers: 67.40.Db, 68.45.Da, 67.40.-w

The Wave-Vector Dependence of Quantum Evaporation from Superfluid

Absolute measurements of the probability of quantum evaporation of atoms by rotons from the surface of superfluid 4He are still problematic. However, it is possible to obtain information about the wave-vector dependence of the evaporation process by using a refined simulation to interpret the experiments of Brown and Wyatt. Two theories (Guilleumas et al. and Sobnack et al.) are compared with t...

Superfluid 4He quantum interference grating.

We report the first observation of quantum interference from a grating structure consisting of four weak link junctions in superfluid 4He. We find that an interference grating can be implemented successfully in a superfluid matter wave interferometer to enhance its sensitivity while trading away some of its dynamic range. We also show that this type of device can be used to measure absolute qua...

The scattering of atoms and rotons at the free surface of superfluid 4He is studied in the framework of linearised time dependent mean field theory. The phenomenological Orsay-Trento density functional is used to solve numerically the equations of motion for the elementary excitations in presence of a free surface and to calculate the flux of rotons and atoms in the reflection, condensation, an...

The Superfluid 4 He Analog of the RF SQUID

This paper describes a superfluid analog of the superconducting RF SQUID.1 Whereas an RF SQUID is sensitive to magnetic flux, the 4He SQUID (Superfluid QUantum Interference Device) is sensitive to absolute rotation. The device described here exhibits several of the characteristic phenomena of SQUIDs. For example: There is a "staircase" response function. The slope of the staircase response is d...

Fabricating Nanoscale Aperture Arrays as Superfluid 4He Weak Links

Arrays of nanoscale apertures have been discovered to exhibit the characteristic signatures of so-called Josephson weak links in superfluid helium-4, 4He [1]. These devices can be used to detect quantum phase differences in a matter wave interferometer [2]. Thin (~ 60 nm) silicon nitride membranes were made by photolithography on silicon wafers and several varieties of aperture arrays shot on t...
